William E. Beard

William Ewing Beard (July 12, 1873 – December 21, 1950) was a college football player, soldier, journalist, war correspondent, naval historian, and long-time officer of the Tennessee Historical Commission and member of the Tennessee Historical Society.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=William Ewing Beard Papers, Addition )〕 In 1892 Beard was the first Vanderbilt quarterback to play Tennessee, and in 1897 while working for the ''Nashville Banner'' he was the first to dub Vanderbilt the Commodores.〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.college-basketball-tickets.net/vanderbilt_commodores/history.htm )〕〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=History of SEC School Mascots )〕 Beard was once editor of the ''Nashville American, ''employing former Vandy player Bob Blake.
